Train Rides is a photographic essay developed from AMTRAK rides I have decided to take these next few years in the state of California and surrounding states.
I did not want to produce a documentary or landscape but searched for a way to to express the experience of sitting on the train, listening to the quiet conversations muffled by the smooth move on the tracks. I noticed the scenery whisping by me as I slept, ate, conversed and read. I was not watching it pass all the time, but I knew it was and could visualize it in my mind.
It is an experiment in layering images of the scenery to create a sensation of movement.
Another part of the expression is to present a more physical presentation that would reference the glass windows surrounding riders, daydreamers, sleepers and diners. So, I am using resin finishes on the prints over the layers to add depth and emphasize the complex layers of the experience.
